Hagamos un repaso por la historia del vestido

LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF DRESS!

LET'S DISCOVER HOW CLOTHING HAS CHANGED OVER THE DECADES!

Let's take a look at the history of the dress, let's see how this feminine garment has been transformed over time.

Nowadays, we have any fashion we want at our fingertips. No matter what garment we want, or how we want it, we can get and enjoy it. If we want to mix a blazer with cycling shorts, we can do it without a problem—they're trendy right now! But it wasn't always like this. Fashion used to be dictated by protocols. We've left behind (and thank you, thank you so much!) the petticoats and corsets that made it hard for women to breathe so they could wear dresses properly.

Let's take a visual look at the evolution of dresses throughout history and play the stylists' game, adding earrings to dresses from different eras.

Let's play, Acuslovers!

Cleopatra would surely have paired her dresses with these earrings, as they are very queenly!

ANCIENT GREECE

In Greece, they opted for fabrics made of natural fibers to make their clothing. They generally wore two pieces: a long undergarment, like a kind of tunic (chiton or peplos) that was tied at the side and reached the ankles, though athletes wore shorter versions. Over this, they wore a cloak (himation or chlamys) fastened with pins.

DID YOU KNOW…

The meaning of ACUS comes from ancient Greece, let me tell you what it means:

  1. In the homes of Ancient Greece, this was the room designated for women. It was there that Penelope wove Laertes' shroud by day and unraveled it by night, awaiting Odysseus' return.
  2. The story of a couple of architects who one day, like many others, decided to reinvent themselves and design jewelry.

THE CONTEMPORARY ERA

In 1900, the Victorian era in Europe was characterized by women wearing dresses with several layers, long and very, very corseted, notable for the exaggerated accentuation of mini waists and for the use of hats and wide-brimmed hats.

Towards the end of this era, dresses began to be more fun, with lace, feathers and rhinestones being worn. An example of this style can be seen in the musical film directed by George Cukor and starring Audrey Hepburn , "My Fair Lady".

THESE EARRINGS ARE A GREAT OPTION WITH HATS AND WIDE-FACE HATS!

    THE ROARING TWENTIES

Dropped waists, fabrics with beading, fringe, feathers—sleeveless dresses are no longer scandalous. Dress lengths now fall to the knee, and sleeves are no longer seen as outrageous. We can see dresses like these in several films, including one with extravagant skirts starring Marilyn Monroe, or in the recent Netflix series Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey.

In the 1920s, they loved stones, and the more sparkly they were, the better!

WE JUMP BACK TO THE 1960s

At the beginning of this era, it was strongly marked by the presence of the Kennedys, both in politics and in fashion, since Jacqueline Kennedy was a true fashion icon in the 60s. All the outfits she wore were wanted by all women; two-piece suits and pencil skirts were in style, very formal, accompanied by gloves.

PENCIL AND MIDI SKIRTS SHOULD BE PAIRED WITH MEDIUM-SIZED EARRINGS

However, in the middle of this decade, miniskirts emerged, and the modern look always accompanied them: wide-heeled heels, knee-high boots, trench coats and berets.

A SIXTIES LOOK COULDN'T BE MISSING FROM EARRINGS LIKE THESE:

    THE 70s

In the 1970s, high necklines were in style, the miniskirt was at its peak, and high-necked pinafore dresses and thigh-high boots became popular. The halter neckline was created in the mid-1970s, and Studio 54, a disco-style nightclub in the US, was all the rage. Glitter, sequins, flowing dresses with lots of movement, and jumpsuits, like this iconic one worn by Cher, became fashionable.

THESE EARRINGS ARE PERFECT FOR “SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER”:

    THE 1980s

This decade is marked by the iconic presence of Princess Diana of Wales; her wardrobe was copied by women all over Europe. There was a strong trend for bold colors, large, straight shoulder pads, and fringed details. In the middle of this decade, Madonna emerged on the music scene, also known for her striking designs in both fashion and accessories, and her eccentric taste for large earrings and crosses.

I'M SURE MADONNA WOULD WEAR THESE ACUS EARRINGS!

    THE REVOLUTION OF THE 90s

In the 90s there was a revolution in fashion, the most minimalist style was sought, elegant garments, tight-fitting lingerie dresses, satin became fashionable.

THESE EARRINGS ARE IDEAL TO MATCH WITH ELEGANT DRESSES:

    THE MILLENNIUM

The turn of the millennium also brought changes to fashion. More daring dresses became popular, animal print emerged, along with paisley patterns, jeans worn under dresses, and metallic tones. In the music scene, the Spice Girls appeared; the group perfectly encapsulated the style of the millennium.

    AND TODAY

There isn't as one defined and specific style as before. However, there are some clear trends in dresses today. Shirt dresses, loose-fitting and comfortable, are popular, perhaps due to the situation we're experiencing with Covid-19, which has led us to spend more time at home, making us opt for more comfortable clothing.

FOR LOOSE-FITTING DRESSES, WE RECOMMEND THESE EARRINGS

Another trend in fashion is the selection of Zero Waste garments. There's a growing awareness of the planet, leading us to choose eco-friendly clothing from local brands and labels. Zero Waste fashion involves a pattern-making technique where not a single centimeter of fabric is wasted; it's all used, allowing designs to be tailored to the pattern. What do you think of this technique?

This year we've also seen a strong trend towards light colors: whites, beiges, and sandy tones. And for two-tone looks, so rather than styles, there are strong trends when it comes to wearing dresses. I hope you enjoyed this post and that it inspired your next looks! It's always good to look back at history. If you liked this post, let me know; I'd love to read your comments 🙂 See you next time!
