10 FEMINIST ICONS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

BEAUTY IS THE NEW FORCE

Once again, we celebrate International Women's Day . For this reason, ACUS pays humble tribute to these 10 feminist icons you may not know.

Today, women join forces to celebrate and assert our rights and demand equality. A right for which our sisters have fought and protested since time immemorial. Multitalented women from fields as diverse as science, writing, film, and design… These women refused to be submissive and accept what was considered “correct.” They experimented in different ways, ultimately changing the course of women’s history.

Many women have changed history in their time. Each one has played a significant role in the unfolding of numerous events. Great revolutionaries who raised their voices, breaking with societal norms. Courageous women who paved the way for countless others to make the world a more just place.

Thus, by tracing our history as a brand, we go back to the beginning. We remember how ACUS was born with the unwavering desire to be that perfect partner with whom you can feel like yourself and accompany you through unforgettable moments. It seeks to be that meeting place for women united by passion and expertise.

A fun fact about our name, which you might not know, is that it originates from Ancient Greece. Acus was a room in noble houses reserved exclusively for women. Just as ACUS is for each of our #acuslovers.

SPECIAL THANKS

"To all those who raise their voices for equality"

A COURT FOR EVERY FEMINIST ICON

While we owe a great debt to many women, today our steps in the struggle will be guided by these 10 feminist icons. They marked a turning point in our collective memory. However, there is no doubt that we still have a long way to go.

HEDY LAMARR, THE INVENTOR OF WIFI

Hedy Lamarr , in addition to being a major film star, developed the spread spectrum theory during World War II. This was a secret communication system for controlling torpedoes by radio. This patent laid the technological groundwork for later inventions such as Wi-Fi and GPS.

However, it wasn't until the 1960s that the invention was used by the United States to develop wireless military communications for guided missiles.

So, when we think of Hedy Lamarr, one of the words that comes to mind is resilience. In this way, our Elenis earrings remind us of the natural talent of this remarkable woman. Our earrings have the imperfect architecture characteristic of natural stones. These ACUS earrings are made up of two pieces that come together to form a whole. Just like women. Because there are no perfect women, only those who strive to improve themselves every day to achieve the best version of themselves.

KATIE BOUMAN, THE FIRST PERSON TO HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED A BLACK HOLE

We can't fail to mention this feminist icon. At just 29 years old, Katie Bouman was the first person to photograph a black hole. This incredible scientist helped develop the algorithm used to create the image. It shows a halo of dust and gas located 500 million trillion kilometers from Earth. Because women do science, too.

For this reason, Katie Bouman is synonymous with effort and dedication. Our Vega earrings in shades of purple and pink pay homage to this remarkable woman. A design crafted from natural stones that align like the planets, creating a striking and captivating composition.

MARY QUANT, GIVING VOICE TO WOMEN'S BODIES

Mary Quant was a fashion designer who popularized the miniskirt in the 1960s. During a fashion show in 1964, she presented the garment with women's thighs exposed. At the time, it caused a major scandal, as women were not allowed to show their knees. From then on, it became an icon of transgression against prevailing morals and empowered women through clothing.

Quant revolutionized women's wardrobes, and that's why we're mentioning her today. We remember her, of course, with these flower-shaped ACUS shoes , the Yoga model. This three-petaled design is simple yet colorful.

NAWAL AL SAADAWI, ''TO BE A FEMINIST IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE A WOMAN''

Nawal El Saadawi fought until her last days for true equality between men and women in the most vulnerable areas. She was also an Egyptian writer, psychiatrist, and activist known for best-selling works such as Woman at Point Zero and was a Nobel Prize in Literature nominee.

The word that best describes Nawal el Saadawi is energy. A woman who never gave up, and whom we remember for her characteristic charisma. Our Boreal lilacs convey a small dose of reality. Because together we are stronger, just like each piece of this design.

VIRGINIA WOOLF, " WOMAN IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE ANGEL OF THE HOUSE"

Virginia Woolf was a British novelist, essayist, editor, and feminist. She wrote important essays, most notably A Room of One's Own . Thanks to this work, she became one of the leading figures of the feminist movement during the interwar period.

Furthermore, this great novelist stood out for the high quality of her works, becoming a prominent figure in 20th-century modernist literature. She used her writing as a way to give voice to her thoughts, gaining significant importance within the movement.

This nonconformist marked a turning point in contemporary thought. For this reason, the Atocha model symbolizes the passage from one generation to the next through its stones. Each stone represents the challenges faced by each era and how we strive to overcome them. Earrings with great strength, just like this novelist.

MARIA TELO, THE WOMEN'S RIGHTS LAWYER

This Spanish jurist and feminist is considered one of the 100 most influential women of the 20th century for her advocacy of women's rights. Furthermore, it is worth noting that María Telo promoted, during the Franco regime, the reform of the Civil Code that ended the requirement of wives' obedience and the need for marital consent in 1975.

A great advocate for equality in an era when it seemed almost impossible, she improved the lives of many women. Undoubtedly, her shrewdness was her forte, just like these Seed shoes . This model reminds us of the simplicity and composure of this jurist who achieved great things.

The Seed earrings have a simple design, but thanks to the natural light of the stone, they shine on their own, just like all of us.

AMELIA EARHART, THE FIRST WOMAN TO FLY AN AIRPLANE

Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who became famous for her first attempt to circumnavigate the globe along the equator. Although she came very close to achieving her goal, she became a global hero. She sparked a significant debate about women's rights and gender equality in the early decades of the 20th century. She also founded The Ninety-Nines , an organization for women pilots, in 1929. She became a professor of aviation at Purdue University and a columnist for Cosmopolitan magazine, where she promoted campaigns for women's rights.

This aviator made history with her bravery and courage. She was a pioneer in the fight for equality, and today, she couldn't be left off our list. This feminist icon climbed to the top and never gave up in the face of adversity. This reminds us of our Judit Trepador earrings, which descend to the very top of the ear in an elegant and sophisticated way. Their lilac tones remind us of the day we're celebrating today.

ROSA PARKS, AND HER FIGHT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Rosa Parks stood out as a true champion of civil rights in the United States. She lived in a time when people were segregated based on race and religion. Parks was a woman who refused to follow orders, and with a single gesture, she shook the world. This remarkable woman refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in 1955. This act sparked the Civil Rights Movement. It's important to remember that, during that era, African Americans were required to give up their seats to white people. For this act, Rosa Parks ended up in jail.

Through this act, Rosa Parks caught the attention of Martin Luther King and together they undertook numerous protests that reached the United States Supreme Court.

Our Purple Mini Diwa commemorates this feminist icon. With its teardrop shape that flows into a circle, we remember the tears shed by each of the women who have shaped history. These ACUS (Association of Women) bring security and unity on this special day.

MALALA YOUSAFZAI, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER

Among the many achievements of this Pakistani student, activist, and blogger, she stands out as the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Her incredible and heartbreaking story is known worldwide—a story that opened the eyes of society.

Civil rights activism is Malala Yousafzai's most prominent role, particularly in advocating for women's rights in the Swat Valley of Pakistan (where girls are denied education under the Taliban regime). Because of her activism, she was the victim of an assassination attempt on October 9, 2012, in Mingora, orchestrated by a Taliban-linked terrorist group. However, far from discouraging her, the attack only fueled her renewed determination. Today, she continues to fight for the rights of Muslim girls.

Malala Yousafzai is already synonymous with courage and active fight for human rights. Therefore, through these Hali earrings , we journey towards new beginnings. The word Hali means to start over. Furthermore, its precious stones and colors evoke perseverance and strength. Undoubtedly, one of the most distinctive and characterful designs.

VALENTINA TERESHKOVA, THE FIRST WOMAN IN SPACE

In this selection of feminist icons, we couldn't forget Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova . A Russian cosmonaut, engineer, and politician, she was the first woman in space. Selected from over four hundred applicants and five finalists, she piloted Vostok 6, launched on June 16, 1963.

In this selection of feminist icons, we couldn't forget Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova . A Russian cosmonaut, engineer, and politician, she was the first woman in space. She worked in a factory and was selected from over four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6, launched on June 16, 1963. Tereshkova traveled on a solo mission that orbited the Earth 48 times. For three days, she orbited farther than all previous American astronauts combined.

Valentina is a symbol of equality and success. In this case, we've selected our Interstellar model to honor the professional career of this great astronaut. These earrings propel us into space, orbiting among each of the stones that compose them. Drawing a parallel with Christopher Nolan's film Interstellar , our ACUS reflects a space journey to find a place free from sexism and patriarchy, where equality is a reality.

HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY TO ALL!
